The remarkable 2020 Formula 1 season is the subject of discussion in Autosport’s season review podcast.
From the genuine possibility of not having an F1 season at all amid the coronavirus pandemic which forced the last-minute cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix, the series crammed in 17 races with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes ultimately prevailing to secure the F1 world drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
While it was a unique season in terms of a redrawn race calendar and new COVID-19 protocols, it was also notable for F1 reflecting on its own position in the wider world through inclusivity and diversity pledges, symbolised by the taking a knee gesture before each race.
There was also plenty of familiar storylines which developed throughout the season, as the driver market erupted during lockdown in the midst of Ferrari’s decision to drop Sebastian Vettel and culminating in the driver he’ll oust at the rebranded Aston Martin team next year – Sergio Perez – landing at Red Bull at the expense of Alexander Albon after months of speculation.
